On November 24, 1971, a man named Dan Cooper hijacked Northwest Flight 305. He paid for a one-way ticket from Portland International Airport to Seattle-Tacoma Airport. After the passengers got off the plane in Seattle, he had the plane flown to Mexico City. It was during that second flight when Cooper jumped out of the plane. It is believed that he landed southeast of the town Ariel, Oregon by the edge of Lake Merwin, 30 miles north of Portland, Oregon.
